This funky commercial runs through the history of the Adidas brand by following Adidas founder Adi Dassler through his workshop. You’ll see highlights from Adidas storied past — running shoes for Olympian Jesse Owens, cleats for the German national team who won the 1954 World Cup, boxing boots for Muhammad Ali, shoes for tennis players, hip hoppers, Bob Marley, Liverpool F.C., Oasis and the rest of us.

Produced by ad agency 180 Amsterdam, this cool claymation commercial is sure to turn some heads. More than thirty people worked on recreating Dassler’s workshop. It took over a month to build. To top it all off, German actor Jurgen Prochnow (of Das Boot fame) adds Deutsch-flavor to the narration.

Kurtis Blow - The Breaks

After checking out the “Ashley’s Roachclip” post on the awesome Funky16Corners blog, we saw that Larry put up a list of songs that sampled the funky track from the Soul Searchers. Larry pulled this list from The-Breaks.com.

So we went to check out the site, and there’s a ton of great information compiled on sampling from all different types of music. The site divides sample lists by genre and artist, and there’s also a search function that makes it’s easy to find out who took what from whom.

Here’s an example — a list of songs and artists that lifted elements from Kurtis Blow’s classic track “The Breaks.”

The Breaks: (Mercury 1980)

“The Breaks”
Chemical Brothers’s “It Began in Africa”
De la Soul’s “Brakes”
DJ Shadow’s “Basic Mega-Mix”
KRS-One’s “MC’s Act Like They Don’t Know”
Not Enough ft Kurtis Blow’s “The Breaks”
Poison Clan’s “Rough Nigga Gets Busy”
T La Rock ft Jazzy Jay’s “It’s Yours”

So the next time you want to track the journey of a sample, visit The-Breaks.com and find out quickly where samples originated and where they turned up.

On a side note, my buddy Saif still owes me money for stepping on my Kurtis Blow 12-inch and busting to pieces my copy of “The Breaks.” I haven’t forgotten bro…

Adidas Holland Men’s Track Top

You gotta love the Dutch. They’re such chill, laid-back people. Their language sounds like a collision of Armenian and German. They love tulips, smoke-filled coffeeshops and the color orange. They have soccer stars with names like van Nistelrooy, van der Sar and van der Vaart. Seriously — how you can you not love the Netherlands?

Well, now you can show you support for the Dutch with this Adidas Holland Men’s Track Top. The funky orange track jacket features a sick coat of arms style Dutch lion that pops off the orange with force. It’s a great addition to your funky track jacket collection.

The Soul Searchers LP

When you hear funky music that makes you happy, all you want to is capture it, keep it and save for a future good time. The right groove. A head-bobbin’ beat. These things can change your outlook on life within seconds. Seriously, you could be all glum and down and then boom — what the hell was that break I just heard?

We’ve all been there.

After the fixation of a sampled break gets into your head, it can cause some serious damage. You start digging through your own music memory crates trying to find a tune that’ll give context to the loop in your dome. Once you identify where the break comes from, a full-on investigation is launched to find out the origins of the original track.

Tracking down oft-sampled funky breaks is fun stuff. You get to take a chaotic musical trip through pop, hip hop, dance music, and of course, seriously funky music. It’s always fulfilling when you can track down the migrations of a break and experience the full richness of the original context. It’s like books and movies — the OG track is always better.

So let’s try this out. Go and visit Funky16Corners and download Ashley’s Roachclip.

Listen to this funktastic, soulful jazzy journey. About three-and-a-half seconds in, you’ll hear a 20-second break that’ll start the mental digging process off immediately. You’ll be reaching for tracks you can’t even remember to put a mental tag on the break that’s blaring in your internal speakers.

If you want a complete answer to the question - what the hell was that break I just heard? - scroll down on the link above and read the full Funky16Corners post on Ashley’s Roachclip - the Soul Searchers’ frequently sampled track. Funky16Corners is as good as it gets, and this post was certainly a treat.

So check out the track and be sure to read Larry’s take on this classic funky break.

Zapp and Roger - Computer Love Video (Live in Aruba)

Here’s a bonus Zapp and Roger video of a live performance of “Computer Love” in Aruba. For all those funksters who love the talk box sound, watching Roger work his magic on stage is certainly a treat. The guy knew how to work a crowd. It’s so sad that the Troutman brothers musical journey had to end with the bizarre murder-suicide deaths of Roger and Larry on April 25, 1999.

This SF Weekly article details the tragic day when Larry shot Roger and then turned the gun on himself.

Zapp and Roger - Dance Floor Video (Live)

Funky Music, Funky Videos No Comments

Here’s a live video of Zapp and Roger performing “Dance Floor.” With vocoder vocals making a massive comeback (check out Snoop’s “Sensual Seduction” video in the funky video section), it’s nice to get some original talk box love from the dudes who first popularized the sound. Zapp and Roger are often imitated, but rarely do the new-school takes on their signature sound live up to Zapp’s original funky jams.
